چکیده

An evident inequality between the enthalpy of crystallization of amorphous selenium, DHx , and the enthalpy difference between the undercooled liquid and the conventional polycrystalline selenium, DHl→c, was observed, which is inconsistent with the widely accepted idea that the two enthalpies should be equal. The inequality between the two enthalpies is attributed to the excess enthalpy of the nanocrystallized selenium with respect to the conventional polycrystalline selenium. The maximum excess enthalpy of the nanocrystalline selenium amounts up to 30% of the heat of fusion. Based on the assumption that the excess enthalpy of the nanocrystalline sample is concentrated in the high density of grain boundaries, the grain-boundary enthalpies of the nanocrystalline selenium samples were determined. The obtained grain-boundary enthalpies of the nanocrystalline selenium samples are found to increase from 0.27 to 0.32 J/m with the mean crystallite size increment from 9 to 22 nm. It is predicted that an inequality between the two enthalpies of DHx and DH l→c will always occur in the nanocrystallization process of an amorphous solid and that the grain-boundary enthalpies of the nanocrystallized products can then be determined. @S0163-1829~97!01933-4#

Finite Element Modeling of Strain Rate and Grain Size Dependency in Nanocrystalline Materials

Nanocrystalline materials show a higher strain-rate sensitivity in contrast to the conventional coarse-grained materials and a different grain size dependency. To explain these phenomenon, a finite element model is constructed that considers both grain interior and grain boundary deformation of nanocrystalline materials. The model consist of several crystalline cores with different orientations...

Thermodynamic properties of nano-silver and alloy particles

In this chapter, the analytical embedded atom method and calculating Gibbs free energy method are introduced briefly. Combining these methods with molecular dynamic and Monte Carlo techniques, thermodynamics of nano-silver and alloy particles have been studied systematically. For silver nanoparticles, calculations for melting temperature, molar heat of fusion, molar entropy of fusion, and tempe...

Estimation of grain boundary segregation enthalpy and its role in stable nanocrystalline alloy design

Grain boundary segregation provides a method for stabilization of nanocrystalline metals – the selection of an alloying element that will segregate to the boundaries can lower the grain boundary energy, attenuating the driving force for grain growth. The segregation strength, relative to mixing enthalpy, of a binary system determines the propensity for segregation stabilization. This relationsh...

Aluminum-induced Crystallization of Semiconductor Thin Films

Thin film materials of the semiconductors, such as silicon (Si), germanium (Ge) or their alloys, are turning into the most promising functional materials in the energy technology. However, the morphologies of these semiconductor thin films must be varied to be suitable for the different applications, e.g. a large-grained layer as the seed layer of thin film solar cells, a porous structure for a...
